Government data provided by ICE in response to a FOIA request to the Deportation Data Projectand analyzed by Stop AAPI Hate.

Methodology

We used the Deportation Data Project’s (DDP) processed datasets for these dashboards. To count arrests, we used DDP's flag for removing duplicates and removed arrests without a corresponding unique ID, based on both DDP's and UCLA's methodologies. We used DDP's methodologyfor joining arrests and detention stays datasets to identify detentions and deportations that were a direct result of an ICE arrest. Counts reflect total number of arrests, detention entries, and deportations, not number of people. One person can be arrested, detained, or deported more than once. A/PI data includes citizenship countries that lie within Central, East, South, and Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. To compare administrations, we analyzed the time periods under the Trump administration (Jan 20, 2025 to the most recent date available) and the previous administration (calculating the start date based on the number of days in the Trump time period to Jan 19, 2025.) We used DDP's classification of criminal convictions to analyze detentions with no criminal record. Data does not include actions by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Due to data limitations and potential errors in ICE's datasets, reported results are estimates and may be imprecise.
